Avalon Slots Review

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Avalon is a classic among slots games and shows up in tournaments, so I had to check it out.  Now, when I hear Avalon, I think Marion Zimmer Bradley and Mists of Avalon. Now that is a classic book that  offers a fantastic take on the Arthurian legends from the point of view of the female characters.  If you haven’t read it yet, go find it.

Alas, this slot game seems disappointing when compared against the tapestry of history this could have been set against.   Ah, the symbols that might have been.  And that aren’t.  The slots developer must have under paid the graphics designer for this one because we’ve got the 10, J, K, Q, A symbols with an occasional crown thrown on in an attempt to make them seem regal.  The Avalon and Lady of the Lake symbol offer a bit more artistic value done in mysterious gray and shining white.  Avalon is the wild symbol and substitutes for other symbols.  The Lady of the Lake is the Scatter symbol and three or more will win you some free spins.  During the free spins, there  is a gold treasure chest symbol that works as a substitute or wild symbol.   Oh, there are a few other symbols: a gem, a crown, a goblet.  The goblet should be the much searched for Holy Grail of legend, but there isn’t any focus given to it in this game.

Play is pretty basic. Spin the reels and hope to win.  There aren’t any bonus features, other than a “gamble” feature where you can vote on the color or suit of a card.  But nothing inside the game to boost your winnings.  It doesn’t stand up against an iSlot or other interactive game.  But it is a game you’ll see used frequently in tournaments where players don’t want to be distracted by the interactive games.  I think I’ll leave this one for the tournament play and for my own play, choose something more appealing.

Witches and Wizards slot review

Monday, July 26th, 2010

So, I was tempted into playing this slot for two reasons.  The first is that it is an exclusive slot at Bodog Casino, which means there is only one online casino offering it.  Yes, dangle the promise of something exclusive in front of me and I want to check it out.  Fortunately Bodog Casino has an easy to use “Practice Play” option that doesn’t require registration or downloading, so you can check the game out just by jumping over to the site.

The other reason I had to check this out was that the reviews I was reading kept making it sound like it was going to have something close to a Harry Potter theme.  Fortunately, it has a grown up Celtic look rather than a Harry Potter look to it. Which was a bit of a relief for me.  Not that I don’t enjoy the Harry Potter books, it’s just that turning a series of young adult books set in a school into a slots game felt wrong.   But Witches & Wizards avoids that problem and any potential lawsuits from the Rowling camp by going with the broader Celtic theme.

The slot is a Realtime Gaming slot, which means it relies heavily on the 10, J, Q, K, A symbols to save the trouble of developing 5 more creative symbols.  (Just a personal opinion there, but come on, how hard is it to give us more unique symbols.)  Here the symbols are set against backgrounds that look like elegantly carved Celtic blocks, so I did like the artistic feel of them.  The other symbols on the 5 reel, 25 line game are a Skull and bones symbol, a Book of Shadows or Grimoire, a Witch, a Wizard, A Cauldron that serves as the substitute symbol.

The Wand is the scatter symbol and three or more wands will trigger the Magical Experiment feature which gives you ten free spins that cast a spell on the reels.  Unfortunately, that proved to sound more exciting in the reviews that it proved to be in the game.   During the ten free spins, you can potentially experience the Wild Explosion where a random symbol is chosen to become a wild symbol everywhere it appears on the reels. Or the Wild Growth where any wild symbols on the reels expand to fill the entire reel.  Or the Metamorphia Wild where wilds are randomly added to the reels.  And the Win Multiplication where all wins are multiplied by 2 to 10 times their value.  Despite all the promise of magic, it really doesn’t do me much good to give me extra random symbols on reels 4 and 5.  That might help if I already had a win, but it doesn’t give me a win if I don’t have one.  Overall, I won less on the free spins here than I do on other slots games.

I’m giving this one 3 cups of tea out of 5.  It isn’t a bad slot game and the Magical Experiment feature does give me something to aim for.  But it doesn’t have the interactive feel of other slots games and the overwhelming use of basic symbols doesn’t give it the visual appeal of other Witchy games.  But it does have an advantage in that you can hop over to Casino.Bodog.com and play for free without registering or jumping through any other casino hoops.

War of the Worlds Slots Review

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

This game is more properly title “Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of the War of the Worlds 100 Line Slot.”  A name that I found a bit misleading because no one in the slot game breaks out in song.  But the “musical” version of War of the Worlds was actually a 1978 concept album using progressive rock to tell the classic story and the slots game does have a good sound track filled with dramatic science fiction appropriate music.  But this game is also worth checking out for the quality of the graphics, which are the best I’ve seen on a slot game so far.

The game will appeal to lovers of Science Fiction and Steam Punk as well as anyone who enjoyed the classic War of the Worlds novel by H.G. Wells, which it is based on rather than the contemporary interpretation of the Steven Spielberg movie.  It is a 100 line slot game, and as with all slot games, you’ll want to play all the lines for the best odds at winning.  So, plan to spend at least $1 a spin unless you play for free.  This isn’t a cheap game to play. I was down $150 virtual dollars at one point.

Virtual dollars because this slot is available only on sites like Virgin Games, which do not accept players from the United States.  Now, I was able to find a wireless connection that allowed me to play the free Flash version on the Virgin Games website.  Since I can’t open an account with the site, I only played the free version.  If you are in the United States, you’ll face similar restrictions.  If you’re in the UK, can I come visit?  Also Virgin Games offers either a low resolution or high resolution flash version of the game.  Unless you are on a connection with an extremely slow download speed, play the high resolution versions because the stunning graphics are the reason to check out this game.

Now, the game does feature one of my frustrations with slot games — the standard J, Q, K, A symbols. But with so much else going on visually in the game, I’m willing to let them get by with a few simple symbols.  Other than these basic symbols, everything is animated when you hit for a win and even the images on the side bar change as you play.  You’ll want to keep an eye out for the Wild symbols which are liberally scattered on the reels.  If you hit two wilds on the same reel, they’ll expand making the entire reel wild.  This will help keep some small winning coming in.

But it took me over an hour to hit three bonus symbols to trigger the Fighting Machine bonus games.  The game is a very simple arcade style game. You have three cannons which you use to blast away at attacking alien machines.  The power on the cannons increases and decreases, so you want to fire your cannons when they’re at high power.  If you’re in the mood for blasting away at aliens, this bonus game can be very satisfying.  It can also help you earn back some money.  I was down $150 virtual dollars while playing but after a good round with the bonus game, I won that back and was ahead by $28 virtual dollars.

If you’re looking for a slots game with a little classic science fiction action, this may be the slot game for you.

Moonlight Mystery Slot Review

Monday, July 19th, 2010

Make yourself a cuppa (tea that is) and settle in for some classic murder mystery action.   I love this slot because it’s like retreating into a mystery novel, but with the potential to make some money. Or lose some.  Because I never seem to win very often with this game.  But I’ve been playing a Box24.com casino where I can play for free — no real money involved.  Always a great option for checking out a slot game before you risk real money.  And honestly, the online casino operators don’t mind if you play for free.

The slot opens with a little movie to set the scene.  It’s a dark night in London Town and Big been strikes the hour.  This is our introduction to the a classic Who-dunn-it mystery game that’s a little bit Clue and little bit Sherlock Holmes as it takes us back to the classic era of British mysteries.  When Miss Marple solved murder at the vicarage and Lord Peter Wimsey chased down red herrings.

Moonlight Mystery provides us with a collection of the usual suspects for a British Manor house mystery, the kind where Lord Dunnit drops dead after having mysteriously changed his will.  When you play the game, check out the pay table for a convenient listing of suspects. You’ll discover: The Professor, who looks more suspicious than professorly, The Butler who looks a very proper butler, The maid with golden curls, Lady Dunnit who looks down her nose at the others,  and Colonel Dunnit who looks properly stuffy.

To help solve the crime, you have the The Constable, helpfully blowing his whistle, The Doctor who seems a friendly sort of chap, and The inspector, with his deerstalker hat and pipe.  (That other well known detective who wears a deerstalker hat and smokes a pipe apparently brings up copyright and trademark issues.)

Of course this is a slots game so you’ll find a jackpot symbol (a magnifying glass) and a wild symbol (poison bottle) and an icon to trigger free spins (the lantern).  But what you’re after for the most fun is the “Body” icon.  Because pull up three or more Bodies and you’ll launch the Who Dunnit bonus round where you get to be the detective.  (Someone should tell the game manufactures that in a cozy mystery, we try to avoid the blood. But the red scribble on the bonus game shouldn’t upset the sensitive, because otherwise it’d be bothering me.)

Welcome to the Who Dunnit bonus round where on a dark and rainy night the Inspector and the Dcotor have been summoned to solve a murder at Dunnit Manor.  You’ll assist them by selecting the crime scene, the weapon, the culprit and the motive.  First you have to decide to investigate upstairs or downstairs.  Then you’ll be presented with a series of cards similar to “Clue” cards where you select rooms, murder weapons, suspects and motives.  Don’t worry about making a wrong choice because every card is a winner.  It’s just that some cards will win more coins than others.    Once you’ve solved the mystery and won some coins, the game will take you back to the slots reels to spin again.

If you love a good mystery novel and have always  been curious about playing slots, I recommend brewing a cup of Earl Grey and settling in for a little bit of fun spinning the reels with Moonlight Mystery.

Witches Wealth Slot Review

Friday, July 16th, 2010

Eye of newt and mandrake root ,
twinkling cat and wing of bat,
Create a Potion to put Reels in motion
Those who play with stealth
can win the witches wealth

I’m loving this slot game.  But the Witch-themed slots always seem to treat me well when it comes to money.  Maybe I’ve put a spell on them.  Witches Wealth starts with a little intro video where the witch casts a spell to create a fortune in gold, her witch’s wealth. And then with a wink, she invites us to play.

The game is a five reel, nine line slot game where you can select the number of coins you play per line as well as the value of the coins themselves.  So, you can play for pennies or pounds.  I’m playing Roxy Palace, an online gambling site that includes a practice play option so you can check out Witches Wealth without paying any money.  Just register with them and select Practice Play.

The symbols in Witches Wealth include Mandrake Root  (which is the least valuable symbol), a jar of eyeballs, a gold chalice, a cauldron, potion bottles, a spell book, and an owl (the most valuable regular symbol).  But then we get to the special symbols.  The Scatter Bat which wins where ever it’s scattered on the reels. Serena Wild Witch will substitute for all symbols except Mr. Twinkles so she can help raise your score.  And Mr. Twinkle is a cat with a double bonus feature – the Spinning Wand bonus and the Flying Cat bonus.  Match up three or more Mr. Twinkles and you’ll get to spin the wand for a bonus prize. If you’re lucky, you’ll move up to the next level, where Serena flies on her broom to rescue Mr. Twinkles and dodge falling objects.  These bonuses can put you 1600 to 16,000 coins ahead in prizes.

I can’t guarantee that the spell at the beginning of the blog will help you win, but it can’t hurt.
